A soft start, or soft starter control is used to limit the in-rush current and torque of an AC motor during starting to help reduce wear on the motor and other system components. This “softening” of the start has been performed a number of ways over the years, and the most common method in use today is the solid state soft start controller. These controls typically use SCRs for a more controllable starting and stopping of the motor due to the ability to precisely adjust the start / stop time of the motor, as well as starting torque. Some solid state soft starts also incorporate other advances in technology such as field bus or other communications capabilities for control and / or monitoring. These units have become especially popular at facilities using a DCS.
